Latino groups launch a LGBT Public Service Campaign

Many Latino advocacy organizations have joined together in support of a new public service campaign for the LGBT community.

It's called Familia es Familia and it's set to help families accept their LGBT Latino children.

According to NBC Latino, National Council of La Raza, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Cuban American National Council, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the National Hispanic Medical Association, the Dolores Huerta Foundation and the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, are supporting this campaign.

Here's more info:
Though there is a perception that Latino families are “conservative” and reluctant to accept or talk about a gay family member, Duran says the numbers show this is not the case. Sixty eight percent of Latino Catholics believe that being gay is morally acceptable, and 62 percent of Latino Catholics support allowing same-sex couples to marry. Moreover, 73 percent of Latinos agree that a person can express support for gay rights and still be a good Christian.

Duran says the information will help avoid situations like those experienced by Latino actor Wilson Cruz, who has talked publicly about being initially rejected by his family when he first came out as gay. Cruz has been honored by organizations for his advocacy and work with gay youth.

In the Familia es Familia brochure, a Latino parent talks of having kicked the son out of the house when he first said he was gay. “It was eleven years before I understood what a mistake I’d made,” said the Hispanic parent. After more than a decade, the parent apologized, “and now, after all this time, our family is whole again. I never want my son to experience that kind of rejection again.”
I think this is a great initiative, I wish them all the luck.

Hey NOM, most Latinos support Gays

NOM's Brian Brown claimed that Latino always opposed Gay people and marriage. However, a new poll says something different.
On some social issues, Latinos hold views similar to the general public, but on others, Latinos are more conservative. Virtually identical shares of Latinos (59%) and the general public (58%) say homosexuality should be accepted by society. However, on abortion, Hispanics hold a more conservative view than the general U.S. public—half (51%) of Hispanics say it should be illegal in most or all cases, compared with 41% of the general public.
I guess times are changing and Brian, you're wrong again

Brian Brown claims that Blacks and Latinos always hated Gay Marriage

In a sad attempt to raise money, NOM hate leader states that Blacks and Latinos always opposed gay marriage.

See here in their letter:

NOM didn't create this issue. The African American and Hispanic communities have always opposed same-sex marriage. It is the gay marriage activists and Democratic party elites who have forced the issue, ignoring the voices of Black and Hispanic voters.
I just spoke with two of my heroes in the fight to defend marriage, Rev. Sen. Ruben Diaz and Bishop Harry Jackson. They are outraged by these latest attacks, and Senator Diaz has already posted a powerful response on his official senate website.

NOM has marched arm-in-arm with countless African American and Hispanic pastors, community leaders and grassroots supporters. They know us. They know our hearts. There is no way the other side can divide us.

If anything, this unprecedented attack has encouraged our Hispanic and African American colleagues to do even more on behalf of marriage.

My friend, we are building an unprecedented coalition of marriage supporters across all racial, ethnic, political and religious lines.

Blacks, whites and Hispanics...Republicans, Democrats and Independents...Catholics and Protestants, Mormons, Jews and atheists...All standing together for the good of marriage!
Brian, first you mock us and now, you claim to know what's in our hearts? Bitch, have a seat! The jig is up.

Protesters interrupt Marco Rubio's Speech at the Hispanic Leadership Network Conference

DREAMers (folks who support the Dream Act) interrupted Rubio's speech at the Hispanic Leadership Network yesterday.

Naked Politics reports
In the lead-up to Rubio's speech, critics from a group called Presente Action had a propeller plane circling the Doral Golf Resort & Spa with a banner reading, Hey Marco: No Somos Rubios, which translates to "We aren't Rubios." It's a play on words on the word rubio, which in Spanish means blond or fair. The group is attacking Rubio largely over immigration, protesting that the senator doesn't support the pro-immigrant DREAM Act.

After saying a few words in Spanish, Rubio, who was greeted by a standing ovation, said he got a text message froma friend telling him about the airplane banner. "Marco, we're not blond," he said, translating the banner. "Which, by coincidence, neither am I -- although if I'm in the Senate for another year, I may start being a little bit more gray."

The crowd laughed. Then Rubio immediately went into the issue of immigration -- and a couple of suit-clad protesters stood up, raised signs that said "Marco Rubio -- Latino or Tea-Partino" and asked Rubio why he isn't helping them. "You're an immigrant yourself!" they yelled.

Rubio appeared unfazed. Security approached the protesters while Rubio said, "I ask that you guys let them stay, because I think that they're going to be interested in what I'm going to say." Rubio got a standing ovation. "I don't want them to leave," he repeated. "I want them to stay."

"Let them stay!" chanted the crowd.

But the protesters were escorted out.
Rubio's is rumored to be on the VP short list. However, he is not completely loved by the Latino community.

Latino Elected Leaders unite for Gay Marriage in New York

Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez
The support for gay marriage in New York is amazing! Yesterday Latino elected leaders came together to send a message... Make gay marriage legal!

From NY1

Many of New York's Latino elected officials rallied on the steps of City Hall for marriage equality Wednesday.
They called on the state Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo to act immediately to pass same-sex marriage legislation.

They said it is a matter of civil rights and social justice.

"We are here as proud Latinos to say those who claim our culture is against same-sex marriage, they do not. They do not speak for me, and they do not speak for us," said Brooklyn-Queens-Manhattan Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez.

A poll conducted last month by the Siena Research Institute found 55 percent of Latino voters support marriage equality and 41 percent are opposed.
You can't deny it, New York wants gay marriage!

New Poll: Latinos are no Fans of the GOP

A new poll shows that Latinos are moving far away from Republican views and very close to the Democrats.

The survey, conducted by a GOP pollster and consultant, found that Latino voters hold "widely negative" views about the Republican party. Envisioned as a way to "begin the process of understanding both the challenges as well as the opportunities for future Republican candidates in gaining a greater share of the Latino vote," the poll found Hispanic voters tend to view GOP candidates as overly conservative and distrust Republican views on immigration.

While California is unlikely to play a defining role in the 2012 elections, the poll could have implications for states like Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico, where Hispanics have increasing political influence.

Commissioned by Republican strategist Marty Wilson, who managed Carly Fiorina's failed campaign for the California Senate, the survey of 400 California Latino voters found a wide Latino-GOP disconnect in the Golden State. Though they tried to frame it in the best terms possible, Wilson and GOP pollster Bob Moore conceded that there was much "work to be done to convince California Latinos that the Republican Party and its candidates can effectively represent them."
I knew that SB1070, and similar bills in other states, would challenge the long standing loyalties of the Latino community and the GOP.  That particular stance sent a strong negative message that will be damaging in future elections.

To My Latino Fam, Do NOT listen to the "Latinos For Reform" ad

This is foolishnes on tap, for real. Check this mess out

Here's more on this ad:
The man behind a TV ad urging Latinos not to vote in the hotly contested Nevada Senate race says he doesn’t know what he’ll do now that Univision, the Spanish-language network, said it would not run the spot. “Right now we’re reanalyzing the whole strategy,” said Robert de Posoda, president of Latinos for Reform.
The ad was widely seen as an effort to hurt the campaign of incumbent Sen. Harry Reid, a Democrat, who is working hard to turn out Latino voters. Mr. de Posoda, who has long worked with the Republican Party, said he didn’t like either candidate but acknowledged that a Latino boycott would hurt Mr. Reid’s chances.
Democrats from President Barack Obama on down condemned his effort. “I think it is terrible,’” Mr. Obama said Tuesday during a roundtable with reporters from Spanish-language outlets. “It is a cynical political ploy to try to drive Latino votes to benefit a Republican candidate in Nevada who would never vote for immigration reform.”

Mr. de Posoda argues that politicians take Latino votes for granted and have failed to deliver on promises including enacting comprehensive immigration legislation. To teach them a lesson, his ads argue, Latinos should stay home on Election Day. After complaints from Nevada Democrats and some Republicans, Univision said it would not run the spots, called “Don’t Vote.”
“Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting,” a Univision spokesperson said. “Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote.”

The ad has been pulled, Thank Hera.
